MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

« Dombrovskis is the right person for the job. He has recognised that the financial markets must contribute to the fight against the climate crisis. To save the climate, we need more sustainability in the financial markets. Dombrovskis will make financial markets more resistant to climate and environmental risks. His commitment to a new action plan for greener financial markets is an important step and a great success of green financial policy. Dombrovskis’ action plan creates more transparency on sustainability on European financial markets. Uniform transparency rules for all financial actors allow investors to correctly assess environmental risks and prevent abrupt losses in value. We will make sure that new obligations will be less bureaucratic for small financial players than for large ones. A transparent EU standard for green bonds and a consumer label for green financial products will help channel investment into a sustainable economy. We will push for the necessary transparency of green bonds to prevent greenwashing. Strong transparency on sustainability gives positive impulses for green projects and ensures the exit from environmentally harmful industries. The rules for sustainable financial markets must not only regulate the green niche, but should apply equally to all important financial players. If this succeeds, the financial markets will become much more stable and sustainable. »

Hearings of von der Leyen Commission: Paolo Gentiloni commits to present new EU tax action plan

Paolo Gentiloni, nominated to become the future Economic and Tax Commissioner, announced his support to present a new action plan to combat tax avoidance and climate change in today’s hearing before the European Parliament. In response to Sven Giegold’s question about a continuation of the ambitious tax agenda of the previous EU Commission, Gentiloni replied that he would submit to the College of Commissioners a new EU tax action plan against tax fraud and tax avoidance as well as for environmental taxes. After today’s consultation and green light by the committees ECON (Economic and Monetary Affairs), BUDG (Budget) and EMPL (Employment), Gentiloni has a good chance of becoming part of the new EU Commission under President Ursula von der Leyen.

MEP Sven Giegold, financial and economic policy spokesperson of the Greens/EFA group commented:

« The announcement of a new action plan on taxation is one of the first commitments of a nominated Commissioner beyond the mission letters of President-elect von der Leyen. Gentiloni has credibly stated that he is personally dedicated to continuing the EU Commission’s tax agenda. It is good for Europe that the fight against tax dumping continues. A minimum tax on corporate profits is an important prerequisite for more tax justice in Europe.

Gentiloni’s commitment to taxes that protect the environment and our planet is a direct response to the citizens’ vote in the European elections in May. Following the German government’s poor climate package, the new EU Commission must table ambitious proposals to curb climate change. Only concrete and rapid measures such as an effective tax on kerosene and CO2 can save us from the worst ».

 ———————————————————————————-

Please join us in a public action this Thursday, 3rd of October, to call on the Commissioner-designate for Economy (including taxation), Paolo Gentiloni, to commit his support to tax justice and transparency!

Why? Gentolini is appearing in front of MEPs to audition for his role Commissioner-designate for Economy on Thursday morning. So far, key tax justice issues, including public CBCR, have been missing from European Commission President Van Der Leyen’s  political agenda as well as her mission letters to  Gentiloni (Commissioner-designate for Economy) and  Dombrovskis (Executive Vice-President-designate for An Economy that Works for People). We’re working with allies in the Parliament to ensure he’s questioned about his commitment to tax justice and transparency, but we need more  pressure to make our message loud and clear.

In Brussels? Join the action in person!
What: On Thursday 3 October, the new Commissioner for Economy, including taxation, Paolo Gentiloni, will be heard by the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON). To correspond with this, our friends in CNCD and several organisations will take action in front of the European Parliament to call for determined action by the new European Commission for more transparency and tax justice.

When + where: 8am – 10am outside the European Parliament (Agora Simone Veil – Access via Place du Luxembourg, 100 – 1050 Ixelles)

Further details are available on CNCD’s facebook  here and you can contact Jean-Gabriel if you wish to become a co-organizer by emailing  Jean-Gabriel.Vermeire@cncd.be.

Not in Brussels? Please join the action digitally and create pressure across Europe and beyond
Our message is stronger together – please tweet all three relevant Commissioner candidates (even better than just Gentiloni!) on the day of their hearing and urge them to commit their support to tax justice and transparency!
